Zee Entertainment Enterprise Ltd. plans to launch two new channels in Punjab and Kerala to increase its regional offerings to nine local languages.

Both channels will be launched by the next fiscal, Punit Goenka, managing director and chief executive officer of the company told BloombergQuint.

“We will leave no stone unturned for Kerala and Punjab markets. From where we stand today, we see no opportunity for acquisitions, so it has to be greenfield,” he said. In Kerala, the company plans to launch a general entertainment channel while for Punjab, it will be a hybrid between music and films, he added.

The company also plans to expand its global reach with the local channels translated in global languages. "Most of the global markets are largely driven through Indian content repurposed for their markets and we have seen great traction happening in those markets especially for Bollywood,” said Goenka.

Talking about the growth in digital space, he said, the launch of the company’s global over-the-top (OTT) application — Z5, which will integrate the dittoTV and Ozee platforms, will be launched in the next few weeks.

Media conglomerate Zee Entertainment Enterprises (ZEE), which has completed 25 years of operations, is looking to expand its regional offerings with a focus on lucrative Southern markets, a top company official has said.

"We have proved the sceptics wrong not just in Tamil Nadu but we also have a popular channel in Kannada and also in Telugu. We are now looking to expand the portfolio in different genres. Very soon you will see our entry into different genres in the Southern languages. We will enter the Malayalam market very soon," ZEE MD and CEO Punit Goenka said.

He admitted that being late entrants in the South, they need to accumulate far more content.

As per a Ficci-KPMG report, four Southern markets accounted for nearly two-thirds of regional viewership in 2016. Telugu and Tamil channels had the highest viewership share at 23-25 percent each in 2016, with Kannada and Malayalam enjoying 10-12 percent and 6-8 percent, respectively.

Advertising potential for the Southern market is around Rs 5,000 crore, with the Tamil market at Rs 1,800 crore, Telugu at around Rs 1,600 crore and Karnataka and Kerala at Rs 700-800 crore each, the report said.
