MUMBAI: Zee Media Corporation has procured three new licences from the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB). The news broadcaster, which is planning to launch an English news channel, has received two uplinking news licences in English under Wion and Zee 24 Hour Business. The other channel is in Hindi language named Zee Bihar Jharkhand. The company has also got MIB approval to rename Maurya TV as Zee Purvaiya, which is a news channel focused on Bihar and Jharkhand. Jaipur-based Pink City Jewel House has received non-news uplinking licence for a channel named Jewel Alliance. Incidentally, the company had last year launched a jewellery shopping channel called Gemporia TV on direct-to-home (DTH) platforms. As the company did not have a licence of its own, it had entered into an agreement with Hyderabad-based Travel Trendz channel, which went off air recently, to use its licence. “In future we will apply for our own licence,” Pink City Jewel House MD Manuj Goyal had told TelevisionPost.com. Sony Pictures Networks India has received licences from the MIB to launch SAB Bangla, SAB Tamil, SAB Punjabi, SAB Marathi and SAB Telugu. Star India and Viacom18 have got licences under the names Star Gold Romance and Rishtey Cineplex respectively. Taj Television has procured a licence for Ten 2 HD. As on 29 February, the MIB has granted permission to 995 private satellite TV channels and cancelled permission of 126 of these channels. Therefore, the permitted private satellite TV channels having valid permission in India stands at 869, of which 402 are news & current affairs and 467 are non-news & current affairs channels. As many as 755 TV channels have been permitted for uplink from India and also to downlink into India. This includes 380 news and 375 non-news channels. Twenty TV channels have been permitted for uplink from India but not downlink in India, including seven news and 13 non-news channels. The ministry has allowed 94 TV channels to only downlink into India (uplinked from aboard). These includes 15 news and 79 non-news channels.
