Zee Group's Dish TV is leasing four satellite transponders from AsiaSat to further enhance its direct-to-home (DTH) service in India, where it currently leads its competitors in terms of subscriber figures.
The 54MHz Ku-band capacity on AsiaSat 5 will enable Dish TV to expand its high definition (HD) offering to 30 channels, and increase the number of standard definition (SD) channels on the bouquet to 320. Currently the pay-TV platform offers around 270 channels and services.
"The transponders on AsiaSat have provided us with the capacity we need to reinforce our competitive strength in the Indian DTH market," said Rajiv Khattar, president of projects at Dish TV. "With this new capacity on AsiaSat 5, we are able to considerably enhance our DTH services to subscribers by increasing our HD and SD channel offerings, providing more value-added services, localised and region-specific content."
Through these initiatives, Dish TV hopes to attract even more subscribers to its current tally of over 9.5 million.
"Dish TV and AsiaSat have a long standing relationship and it is a pleasure to assist with their expansion plans," said William Wade, president and CEO of AsiaSat. "We look forward to meeting the increased demand from the rapidly developing media market in India."
AsiaSat 5 is located in orbit at 100.5 degrees East, and provides a C-band footprint over 50 countries from Russia to New Zealand and from Japan to the Middle East and parts of Africa. Its fixed Ku-band beams are directed at East Asia and South Asia, with a steerable beam currently positioned over Indochina.
