Funding for a Canadian mobile TV start-up company has been secured from the Indian Angel Network, after it concluded adaptive video streaming technology tests in India and Bangladesh.
Ottawa-based Jigsee will now use the Series A capital raised from Indian Angel Network (IAN) to expand its presence in India, and to "fuel the deployment" of its mobile application in South Asia. IAN's Rehan yar Khan will represent the investor on the Jigsee Board.
Jigsee says its technology provides continuous video streams in low-bandwidth environments, with data rates as low as 50Kbps. When combined with its smart client product, the company claims it "overcome hurdles which have prevented the uptake of mobile TV services in most emerging markets".
The current version of Jigsee technology (1.1) supports Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (j2me) from mobile handset manufacturers such as Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Micromax. However, from April 2011, version 2.0 of the product will extend support to Android devices, according to the company's co-founders Ray Newal and Areef Reza.
