French broadcaster TV5Monde is trying to regain control of its 11 channels and websites after an “extremely powerful” cyber attack by so-called Islamic State.

The attack began around 10pm French time on Wednesday, said Yves Bigot in an interview on RTL radio, and the hackers knocked out the TV channels and posted material on the broadcaster’s Facebook and Twitter feeds. “We’ve been able to restore broadcast of one signal on across all of our channels but cannot send out pre-recorded broadcasts nor restart the production of our news shows,” he said.

The broadcaster is working with police and national security authorities. According to French news agency AFP, the hackers posted documents they claim are the identity cards of relatives of French soldiers involved in anti-Islamic State operations, and threats against the troops.

TV5Monde is broadcast in over 200 countries globally.

France’s TV5Monde victim of Islamist hacking

MUMBAI: French broadcaster TV5Monde has been made the victim of a reportedly unprecedented attack from hackers claiming to belong to Islamic State (IS). The TV network said its TV station, website and social media accounts were all hit by the hacking.

The hackers also posted documents alleging to be ID cards of relatives of French soldiers involved in anti-IS operations.

A message posted by the hackers on TV5Monde’s Facebook site read, “Soldiers of France, stay away from the Islamic State! You have the chance to save your families, take advantage of it. The CyberCaliphate continues its cyberjihad against the enemies of Islamic State.”

They replaced TV5Monde’s social media profile pictures with a masked Islamist fighter. As per reports, the group’s digital director Helene Zemmour called the hack “unprecedented and large-scale.”

“We are no longer able to broadcast any of our channels. Our websites and social media sites are no longer under our control and are all displaying claims of responsibility by Islamic State,” the broadcaster’s director general Yves Bigot told various reporters.
