NDR, the regional affiliate of German public broadcaster ARD for the northern part of the country, will transmit its regional TV channel in high-definition from 1 May 2012.
The supervisory board has approved the plan at its latest assembly in Hamburg and NDR Fernsehen HD will initially be available to DTH households via Astra (19.2° East) with further distribution platforms to follow. The channel will use capacity vacated following the termination of analogue satellite broadcasting in Germany on 30 April 2012.
"With the free-to-air transmission of NDR Fernsehen in high-resolution quality we will comply with many viewer requests," said NDR director-general Lutz Marmor. "We promise: The won't be additional costs in the shape of a 'TV toll' for NDR's HD programme."
