Portability of set-top boxes by year-end: Trai chief

It will keep on delaying....only way to implement this feature is to build a Common STB for all DTH/cable.

Do not expect TS/Dish/airtel will built that STB which will be compatible with rival. It has to be 3rd party OEM like Solid. Thanks to TRAI new tariff order we now know the real cost value of STB so it will benefit those 3rd party OEM

Even if with help of 3rd parties somehow TRAI managed to build a Common STB... All these DTH/CableTV will file cases and prolong it 😉😂

TV viewers may be able to switch their DTH or cable service providers without changing the set top box (STB) by the end of this year, according to regulator Trai's Chairman R S Sharma. "Since last two years we have been trying to make STBs interoperable. Large part of problem has been resolved. There are some business challenges (which) remain... we are looking at this to happen by end of this year," Sharma told reporters at an event here Tuesday.

He added that interoperability in a product should not come as an "after thought" but should be in place at the product planning stage itself. "Open systems are going to be the future. Entire back-end of Aadhaar has been developed on open source software except biometric de-duplication system," Sharma said.

Good move.. this will be a tight slap to dishtv if they do not add missing HD channels on its platform. Whatever rule comes dishtv never listen to anyone & don't change anything except adding useless channels.

Recent trend is acquisition of businesses. Very first let the customers decide from which of these operators are alive at the end of this year. 🤔

Hmm,If a common box is built like @Gopi27 bro said then the UI must be same for all DTH & there won't be any difference in UI of various DTH we are seeing now.

I don't think if the UI is same its a good move...👍
But portability is fantastic if we want to jump from one to other & the DTH operators will be on high alert also as we can easily move. Therefore,at last, the competition will rise.
Would be better to make it compulsory for all LCD LED TV manufacturers to by default make all TV's IDTV compliant with a dedicated slot for a CAM card thus eliminating the need for a set top box altogether. And this IDTV could be a common platform just like mobile handsets and the cam cards could be changed just like switching sim cards in the handset.
As for operator specific functions, they can depend on the functionality of the TV just like some handsets will support MIMO on a network while others on the same network won't, same way some TV's could support recording on a DTH operator while others wouldn't.

CAM Module is a failure technology. So, thats why most of the companies stopped its production.

Instead, Just like how we install Custom ROMs on our Android Phones similarly a Android STB should be build where any DTH Software can be installed.

Only, by this way DTH portability will happen.
