Presently, every DTH connection is taxed at Rs 60 in the state that earns Rs 54 crore per year for the exchequer. There are 16 lakh DTH connections in the state.
After barbs from the Opposition that Punjab Local Bodies Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu was going to tax even viewing of TV, the government is planning to levy a tax of only Rs 5 per month on every connection, including Direct to Home (DTH) connections. Sidhu’s department has decided not to burden the viewers and tax the cable network operators instead.
Addressing media here on Tuesday, Sidhu said the cable network has 40 lakh connections which were making only Rs 15 lakh for the exchequer as a registration fee of Rs 15,000 was charged from the operators. The agenda would be tabled in the next cabinet meeting on October 16.
