As expected,
reports indicate
that viewership
of STAR India
channels has
fallen after STAR
TV's a-la-carte
only RIO
implemented since 10 November
2014.
Most MSOs and digital Headends
have taken only 7 STAR TV channels,
and included them in their standard
Cable TV packages. All other
channels have been left for a-la-
carte subscription by the end
consumer.
CHROME DATA
A look at the 'Opportunity To
See' (OTS) collated week-onweek by
Chrome Data Media & Analytics,
indicates that consumers have
preferred to switch off niche and
sports channels from the Star TV
Network.
A-LA-CARTE CHANNELS DOWN
A m o n g s t Sports channels, Star
Sports 1, 2, 3 & 4 saw their
viewership drop by 9.5% (from
54.2% to 49.08%) despite the India -
Australia cricket matches currently
on the channels.
Star India's English entertainment
channels like Star World and Fox
Crime plummeted with a 27.7% drop
in OTS.
Star's English movie channels' OTS
fell 11.7%.
Star's English GEC OTS Has Fallen
28%
PACKAGED CHANNELS CONTINUE
WELL
On the other hand, Star TV channels
that MSOs provide without customer
intervention, continued to do well.
The OTS for Star Utsav and Star Plus
saw a marginal drop of 0.5%.
These figures are for an 'Opportunity
To See' and are probably pointers of
a trend that will be known after
viewership figures emerge a month
later.
However, clearly, there is a major
concern for STAR India. Lower
viewing or availability of the
channels in to TV homes will
inevitably hit Star India's Ad
revenues.
DISTY PERSONNEL QUIT
STAR TV's shift to RIO rates for its
digital channels in DAS 1 & 2 areas
on 10th November seems to have
created turmoil within the company
as well.
TS Panesar, Executive Vice President
at Star TV handled distribution DAS
& DTH markets, quit and joined
Hathway. Incidentally Hathway's CEO
Jagdish Kumar was also a Star TV
veteran.
Sandeep Bharadwaj, Star India SVP
distribution, also quit in November.
Bharadwaj handled distribution for
Star India's channels in DAS Phases
I and II territories. Reports are that
he is joining Times Television
Network as distribution head for
cable.
There are tough times ahead for Star
India's channel distribution &
subscriptions.
