January 2016 brought a 62% increase in subscriptions to India’s direct-to-home (DTH) satellite TV platforms, according to Chrome Data Analytics & Media.

The state of Jharkhand saw its DTH penetration figure jump to 54% in January from just 1%, while West Bengal – which had previously registered almost zero DTH penetration – rose to 42%. DTH penetration in Jammu & Kashmir rose from 22% to 61% following the end of year deadline for Phase III of India’s nationwide cable digitisation programme.

DTH subscriptions in the state of Gujarat jumped to 34% from 3%, while Chhastisgarh grew from 17% to 39% in January. DTH penetration in Karnataka increased 12% with 21% DTH penetration, while Goa’s subscriber base jumped 11% to 21% during the first month of 2016.

The state of Uttar Pradesh registered a DTH penetration rate of 78%, while Haryana’s stood at 32%, Rajasthan’s at 41%, Punjab’s at 22% and Uttrakhand’s was 45%, said Chrome Data Analytics & Media.

At the end of June 2015, there were 78.74 million registered DTH pay-TV subscribers in India, of which 39.74 million were active users.

India has six private DTH operators, namely Dish TV (with 27% of the market in October 2015), Tata Sky (20%), Airtel Digital (19%), Videocon d2h (16%), Sun Direct (12%) and Reliance Digital TV (6%).

Despite a High Court stay in five states on the implementation of Phase III digital addressable systems (DAS) due to a shortage of set-top boxes, Chrome claims India has, overall, achieved 50% digitisation for this latest phase. Indeed, three states – Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Punjab – had achieved over 90% digitisation by January 2016, with Uttar Pradesh following at 89.2% digitisation.
