MUMBAI: After retaining its existing properties and acquiring new ones, it’s expansion time for Zee Entertainment Enterprises’ Ten Sports.

The sports broadcaster, which owns and operates five channels, is planning to launch more in the next fiscal.

Launching new channels will allow it to experiment with language feeds to expand the reach of its content. The need to add channels has also arisen as Ten Sports is not able to broadcast a lot of live content on the existing channels due to choc a bloc fixed point chart (FPC).

Ten Sports had recently announced that it will offer its flagship property WWE in local languages. To offer content in local language in addition to the original feed will require new channels.

“We are planning to launch more channels next fiscal. Currently, we have a lot of content from our existing as well as newly acquired properties, but we don’t have enough channels to play it. We are also considering multiple feeds for some of our properties like WWE,” said a source in the company on condition of anonymity.

The sports broadcaster is also contemplating whether to have specialised channels for each sport or to have a hybrid model where multi sports are aired on each channel.

Ten Sports runs four specialised SD channels, namely Ten Sports, Ten Cricket, Ten Action, Ten Golf and one high-definition (HD) channel Ten HD, which offers best content on Ten Sports network in HD.

The sportscaster has undertaken a consumer research to understand viewer behaviour in terms of the kind of content that viewers want and the packaging of the content. “We have not finalised anything yet on whether we should have specialised channels or hybrid ones,” the official added.

Ten Sports had retained two of its key properties, UEFA Euro and WWE, besides acquiring a slew of new properties particularly in football including Capital One Cup, Sky Bet Football League, A-League and DFB Cup.

Ten Sports owns broadcast rights to five cricket boards—South Africa, West Indies, Zimbabwe, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. It also holds rights to UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, Spanish Super Cup, French League, Npower Championship, Copa del Ray, and Brazilian League.

In Tennis, it has properties like the US Open, WTA Events, and ATP events while in Golf it has European Tour, Asian Tour, Ryder Cup, US PGA Championship, LPGA Tour, Royal Trophy, PGTI and Golf Channel Block.

Furthermore, it has rights to the Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, IAAF World Championship, Tour de France, LFL and Beach Volleyball.
