After clearing applications of four television channels in January, the Information and Broadcasting (I&B) ministry has given the green signal to six more. These include three news and non-news channels each. The three news channels whose applications have been cleared include Bhole Baba Real Estate Developers’ NSN News, Naman Broadcasting and Telecommunications’ Prabhatam HSB, and Prabhatam Lifeline channels.

The three news channels have got licence for Hindi, English and other Indian regional languages. The non-news channels that have got clearance from the ministry are Squoosh Entertainment’s Fata Fati channel in Bengali language, Bhole Baba’s Daati Ahsas in Hindi, English and other Indian regional languages, and Cobol Communications’ Satkar in English and all Indian languages. As many as five applications were cleared in the month of February while one, that of Bengali channel Fata Fati, was cleared on 3 March just before the enforcement of the election model code of conduct. With the clearance of the six new channels, the number of private satellite channels in the country has gone up to 792. These include 392 news channels and 400 non-news channels.

In total, the ministry has cleared 10 TV channel applications this year. Earlier in January, the ministry had approved the applications of Green TV, Hastey Raho, Satlon News and Maha Movie. Last year, it had cleared seven applications that include Anugraha Malayalam (earlier Hind TV), CVR News English, CVR Spiritual Om, Page 3, Namastute (earlier RR News), 10 TV, and Samachar Plus Rajasthan (earlier Buland News). I&B ministry secretary Bimal Julka had in January disclosed that 200 channel licences are pending with the ministry. “We have so far issued licences to about 800 channels and applications are being received every day.

After having a look at the data available with the ministry, there are 200 channel licences pending with the ministry,” Julka had stated. Even before Julka had admitted, TelevisionPost.com had in December reported how the MIB is going slow on issuing licences for launching television channels. As per information available till 30 September 2013, there are 218 applications pending for uplinking and downlinking permissions for new channels.
