The 30th Olympic Games, which commence next month in London, will be given eight dedicated 24 hour channels on sub-Saharan African pay-TV platform DStv by broadcaster SuperSport.
Among the channels will be a new high definition (HD) channel, to be launched on 27 July for London 2012, bringing the broadcaster's Olympic HD count to four – alongside four standard definition channels.
"We aim to be bigger and better than ever," said Happy Ntshingila, chief executive officer, SuperSport. "The Olympics demand excellence from athletes, but for us it also demands excellence as Africa's leading sports broadcaster. We have channelled considerable resources, time and energy into our Olympic offering for our subscribers. London 2012 is sure to delight them."
Among the pundits on the SuperSport broadcasting team will be athletics icon CarlLewis, a nine-time Olympic champion. Lewis will be joined by 2004 Olympic relay swimming champion Ryk Neethling; the 2004 800m champion Dame Kelly Holmes; and reigning 800m champion Wilfred Bungei.
In addition, Maximo 1 will be a 24-hour dedicated Olympic TV channel in Portuguese, with Maximo 2 providing ad-hoc live events relevant to Portuguese speaking viewers in Mozambique, Anglola and South Africa.
As well as the eight TV channels, Supersport.comhas this week launched a dedicated Olympic section, which is also available for mobile devices as a SuperSport app. Together with Mobi, supersport.comwill provide live video streaming of its Olympic Gold channel (SS4) from 9am each day. DStv Mobile will also feature select events on SS.Mobi.
SuperSport 1 and 2, plus SuperSport 3, which will carry football from the Olympics, among other events, and SuperSport Gold (SS4) will also be available live on DStv's Walka and Drifta mobile TV devices via DVB-H.
DStv On Demand, which is available on HD personal video recorders (PVRs), will feature daily highlights, plus the opening and closing ceremonies.
