In its manifesto for the upcoming general election, the J Jayalalithaa-led All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) has promised to allow the state government to provide cable TV service. The AIADMK has also asserted that it will take action to obtain digital addressable system (DAS) licence for the state-owned Tamil Nadu Arasu Cable TV Corporation (TACTV). Pertinently, the sector regulator Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) had recommended against allowing government or government-owned entities to enter television broadcasting or distribution business. The party stated that by refusing DAS licence to TACTV, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has denied the poor and downtrodden the opportunity to view a large number of channels at a low cost. It also said that TACTV is providing cable services to enable the people of Tamil Nadu to view a greater more number of channels at a lower cost. AIADMK is contesting all the 40 seats in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on its own.
