MUMBAI: The FM service of All India Radio
(AIR) will cover the whole country in a few
years, Minister of State for Information &
Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Rathore said
today while inaugurating the new FM
transmitter for Vividh Bharat service here.
“At present 40 per cent of the country has
been covered by FM and we will take it up to
60 per cent in the next two to two and a half
years,” Rathore said.
The minister also said that 400 transmitters
were already available in the country and
250 more will be added in the next two to
three years.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s interaction
with the people through ‘Mann Ki Baat’ has
hugely added to the popularity of radio.
“With 92 per cent coverage of the country,
AIR touches every one’s life. Radio gives us
information and knowledge, and entertains
us without distracting us like television or
social media,” the minister added.
Available on Akashvani at 102.8 MHz, the
FM Vividh Bharati channel will serve
approximately 20 million people in and
around Mumbai.
While it continues to be available on short
and medium waves, the Vividh Bharati
service can now be accessed via mobiles.
