Anil Ambani-promoted Reliance Big Broadcasting has surrendered four non-news licences to the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB).
These are under the name of Big Fame, Big Love, Big Power and Big Prime. Earlier, Reliance Broadcast Network and global media conglomerate CBS Studios had dissolved their 50:50 joint venture to operate television channels in India.
The JV had rolled out three entertainment channels – Big CBS Prime, Big CBS Love and Big CBS Spark.
The Ambani company and Europe’s RTL Group also ended their 50:50 JV in India. The JV used to run a channel called Big RTL Thrill. After the JV ended, Reliance runs a channel called Big Thrill.
Reliance currently runs three TV channels, namely Big Magic, Big Magic Ganga and Big Thrill in India. For the international market, it has Big Magic International. Apart from Ambani, Rajeev Chandrasekhar-promoted Asianet News Network (ANN) has surrendered its news & current affairs channel licence under the name Asianet India News.
ANN currently runs two news channels, namely Asianet News and Suvarna News. In the latest update, five channels, including one news & current affairs and four non-news channels, have surrendered their TV channel licences to the MIB.
The government has also issued a downlinking licence to Da Vinci Media India’s edutainment channel Da Vinci Learning.
Da Vinci Media India has formed a joint venture with Raghav Bahl’s Quintillion Media to run the channel and digital properties. With the surrender of these five licences, the number of channels in the country has shrunk to 826 as on 31 May 2015.
Earlier, news channels ABC News and Voice of Nation had surrendered their TV channel licences to the ministry, taking the total number of channels down to 830 as on 30 April 2015.
