MUMBAI: Indian TV broadcasters are showing that they mean business, especially in the area of self-regulation of content.
Day before yesterday’s (19 July) Indian Broadcasting Foundation (IBF) meetingwhich discussed some 25 issues – among which was the ratings issues, concluded positively at least in one direction.
The IBF’s Broadcasting Content Complaints Council (BCCC) announced that member channels can be penalized up to Rs 30 lakh if they do not heed the advisories issued to them when they are up to some mischief. The fines can be levied on those who also constantly violate the programme code and also the guidelines laid down by the BCCC.
Hitherto, the only penalty levied on culprit channels was that they would be forced to run an apology scroll when hauled up. But this despite, quite a few shows on some television channels have run the wrong side of the programme code which is why the IBF board was forced to come up with such a decision.
Shows like Emotional Atyachar have more than once been frowned upon and the broadcaster UTV Bindass rapped on the knuckles..And films like The Dirty Picture had to undergo several cuts to be considered safe for airing on TV for family viewing.
The fine amount will depend on the severity, degree and duration of the violation, apart from the number of complaints and harm caused, say industry sources.
The IBF also interacted with the information & broadcasting minister Manish Tewari and the new secretary Bimal Julka, and the BCCC chairperson Justice Shah – according to media reports - announced the penalties, following the completion of the board meeting
