In a good news for the cricket fans, the World Cup, for the first time, will be beamed in high-definition (HD) mode through Direct-to-Home (DTH) service providers. ESPN Star Sports, which holds the broadcasting rights for the mega event in India, said it has so far roped in three DTH providers.
"The HD Feed of ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 is currently available on Dish TV DTH platforms. We are currently in talks with the remaining DTH players," an ESPN STAR Sports spokesperson said.
To watch the matches in HD mode, one needs an HD-compliant TV, an HD set top box (which is different from normal ones) besides wires specially made for the purpose. Earlier, the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa and the Delhi Commonwealth Games were shown on HD platforms. Cricket's huge following in India is expected to give a boost to the HD TV viewers in the country.
Indiatimes bags exclusive mobile rights: Indiatimes 58888, the mobile division of India's leading internet and mobile content service provider Times Internet Limited, has bagged the exclusive mobile rights for the ICC World Cup. The rights, acquired from Reliance Communications Limited, include mobile content services like SMS, voice and video alerts, live audio commentary, mobile content downloads besides 2G and 3G services. Other services to be offered include World Cup theme as ring back tone, post-match analysis and mobile marketing advertisements.
