Buoyed by the government’s cable TV digitisation drive, the Indian arm of American semiconductor company Broadcom Corporation has identified high-definition (HD), hybrid set-top boxes (STBs) and broadband as the next big thing in the Indian market.

“We are focused on getting the country to look at HD, hybrid STBs and broadband more proactively and aggressively,” Broadcom India managing director Rajiv Kapur told TelevisionPost.com.

MPEG4 technology is a key segment for Broadcom with five out six direct-to-home (DTH) operators using MPEG4 STBs with Broadcom chips. However, MPEG2, the technology used predominantly by the cable TV sector, does not fit into the sweet spot of what Broadcom does.

“Because cable TV is predominantly MPEG2, it doesn’t fit into the sweet spot of what we do. Our sweet spot is more into the emerging side of cable, which is a combination of HD, hybrid and broadband.

We also have a presence in MPEG2 and will probably see healthy business in it, but it’s not our focus area,” he said, adding that the top five MSOs use one or the other Broadcom technology.

He, however, stated that the MSOs have a bigger task in hand which is to digitise their analogue networks and protect their customers from shifting to DTH.

“After digitisation is complete, HD will be a key focus area for MSOs,” he noted. He also said that digitisation is a continuous process and not a one-step process as most people perceive it to be.

The addition of new TV homes and the constant upgrade cycle from basic to HD to hybrid TV makes India one of the most exciting markets.

The DTH business is looking good for the company due to MPEG4 technology. “We are strong in MPEG4 and satellite (DTH) is all MPEG4.

As a result, our strengths fit into the Indian market very well. We have a healthy volume of STBs with Broadcom chips shipped by DTH operators.” The top players in cable TV and DTH are the most important clients for Broadcom.

However, the company also caters to Tier II and III segments, thanks to its relationship with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).
