'Court’ beats popular movies as India’s entry to Oscars

Marathi film ‘Court’ has beaten popular Bollywood films like ‘Bahubali’ and ‘Piku’ to become India’s entry to the Oscars.

The other top contenders for the category were ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’, ‘NH 10′, ‘Haider’, ‘Kaaka Muttai’ and ‘Kuttram Kadithal’.

Around 30 movies were in the race for India’s official entry. A 16-member jury headed by veteran filmmaker Amol Palekar were part of the process.

‘Court’, which is the saga of a radical poet accused of waging war against the state, will represent India in the best foreign language category at the awards ceremony.

The multi-lingual arthouse drama is directed by Chaitanya Tamhane. In 2015, the film won the Best Feature Film award at the 62nd National Film Awards. It has also won other awards at film festivals.

The film examines the Indian legal system from the perspectives of the accused, the lawyer defending him, the public prosecutor and the judge presiding over the case.

It stars Vira Sathidar, Vivek Gomber, Geetanjali Kulkarni, Pradeep Joshi, Usha Bane and Shirish Pawar in pivotal roles.

Besides acting, Gomber has also produced the film, which has Sambhaji Bhagat’s music, Mrinal Desai’s cinematography and Rikhav Desai’s editing.

‘Court’ was released in theatres in India on 17 April 2015 and received critical acclaim.

Have you watched it ?
