MUMBAI: Doordarshan has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with China Central Television (CCTV) for co-production and programme exchange.

The agreement focuses on the exchange of television programmes, promotion of co-production on themes of mutual interest, and the training of production and technical staff. The exchange of programmes will cover cultural and tourism programmes to promote people-to-people relations.

Prasar Bharathi CEO Jawahar Sircar and his Chinese counterpart signed the agreement after the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, to expand cooperation between the two countries from films to television co-productions.

According to Sircar, the agreement between CCTV and DD will foster better people-to-people understanding between India and China. The agreement enables the two public broadcasters to share programmes free of cost.

DD and CCTV will seek to leverage their extensive archives and exchange TV programmes on culture, education, science, agriculture, entertainment, sports, and news and current affairs. Apart from content exchange (most of which will be on ‘gratis’ basis), DD and CCTV will also seek to jointly produce TV programmes on areas of mutual interest.

The top priority will be documentaries on the travels of Fa Xian and Hieun Tsang to India.

Also envisaged within the MoU are mechanisms to promote training for programme and technical staff of the two organisations through exchange and bilateral visits of DD and CCTV personnel.

Modi described the China visit as one that will boost friendship between two of the world’s most ancient civilizations and, in the modern context, the largest developing nations and two leading economic powerhouses of the world.
