DD ORDERS DTT TRANSMITTERS
Doordarshan seems committed to maintaining its informal commitment to shift to Digital Transmissions by 2017.
In January, Doordarshan confirmed 2 orders for a total of 23 DTT (Digital Terrestrial Transmission) DVB T-2 transmitters on Harris Broadcast - USA.
"Our DVB-T2 solution maximises spectrum capacity, allowing Doordarshan to roll out multiple channels serving different communities as well as offer multiple HD channels. For a project of this scope and significance, Doordarshan looked for a partner with a strong local service commitment and presence along with best-in-class technologies that delivered the lowest lifecycle costs. Our Maxiva™ ULX architecture provides the best power efficiency in the market, which was a critical consideration for Doordarshan when energy consumption is such a large part of the operating cost," said Joe Khodeir, senior vice president Asia at Harris Broadcast. The Maxiva ULX transmitters ordered are liquid-cooled, solid-state transmitters.
HD DTT IN METROS
Phase-1 will see the roll out of a 6 KW DTT transmitter in Mumbai, New Delhi, Kolkata & Chennai.
These new DTT transmitters will add High Definition (HD) channels to DD's existing DTT channels being broadcast in the metros.
REGIONAL DTT
The second order is for an additional 19 identical transmitters that will enable set up of the first 19 Non metro DTT regional transmissions, in various parts of India. All regional DTT transmissions will be in Standard Definition (SD) not HD. However the transmitters are flexible to be able to shift to HD TV transmissions at a future date, if required.
DTT IN INDIA
Doordarshan commenced DTT transmissions several years ago, first in New Delhi and then in the other 3 metros. However, there is almost no awareness of these transmissions, amongst consumers. Further, the necessary DTT receivers are not available in their local markets.
Also the law requires the compulsory carriage of the relevant Doordarshan Channels on all Cable TV, DTH and IPTV platforms. These platform reach almost all TV viewing homes in the 4 metro cities, making reception of the same channels through DTT, redundant. The DTT telecast in HD will however provide a value add, if they are not carried by private platforms. n
