Good news....
Gone is the lethargy you associate with Doordarshan. No longer does DD Podhigai go through the motions of inert telecasts, with hardly any motivation for the viewer to watch them. Even after the emergence of the Suns and Vijays, DD was in deep slumber. But today it has begun to show sprightliness that are yielding positive results.
“ We are putting up a stiff fight on the satellite zone,” laughs Andal Priyadharshini, Head of Programmes, Chennai, and Head of Office, Coimbatore and Madurai Kendras. “The recent write-up in Friday Review about our staid and serious anchors has resulted in a whole range of fresh, camera-friendly faces entering our portals. We’ve infused our shows with young blood.”
The veracity of the claim unfolds when we enter the studio where a live telecast of ‘Matinee Show’ is going on. The anchors are well-known small screen faces Raj Kamal and Latha Rao. Casual, smiling and humorous and effervescent, they are perfect hosts. ‘Matinee Show’ is DD’s effort to zoom in on the innumerable talents in various fields of art. “Presenting live shows requires meticulous planning. And we have five women producers on the job. Our programmes are proving viable too. Women are generally ace planners,” says Andal, the feminist, comes to the fore.
“‘Matinee Show’ goes beyond soaps and cinema, and our programmes are proving viable too.” Commercials on Podhigai were once a rarity. But Ad breaks may soon become a norm. “Dance, drama, music, fashion, culture, you name it we have it, all showcased in pithy 10-minute slots that run for an hour and a half, with a chief guest and two anchors.” Even as the special guest is ushered in it is uploaded on Facebook, and soon live streaming begins. The aim is to kindle interest in the viewer.
Social consciousness
Recently, Podhigai held a ramp walk for the differently-abled. “And without ado we open up opportunities for the third gender wherever possible. Like Sudha here. She’s an example of our collective social consciousness. She’ll be reading viewers’ letters on ‘Edhiroli’ with me this evening,” Andal introduces Sudha, who’s all smiles.
But who writes on post cards in this era of e-communication? “You’d be surprised at the response! We even award prizes to the best letters. Don’t we still preserve letters we consider precious?”
Podhigai has a vibrant social media presence thanks to the technical support of Ravichandran, CG Operator, and Sivakumar, Information Assistant. “Both are our Social Media persons. Karunakaran is our Programme Coordinator.” As I interact with them I’m amazed at their zest! “And heading the team is M. Anandan, our DDG (Engineering).” SMS alerts on mobiles, Whatsapp info, YouTube uploads, interaction with audience through Skype calls beamed live, Podhigai does them all.
While most channels thrive on dubbed serials and film-based telecasts, Podhigai prides itself on its nearly six hours of live show every day! Worthy, topical cinema content includes ‘Kaviya Thaayin Ilaiyamagan,’ a weekly show dedicated to Kannadasan, ‘MGR 100,’ ‘Star Nites’ with popular personalities, Cookery & Health shows, Sports Quiz and more.
‘Endhaiyum Thaayum’ has celebrities sharing nostalgic memories of their parents. “Many of them get emotional as they speak. It’s our way of telling youngsters the need to respect elders, when they are around.” ‘SAT-C’ showcases Short Films, independent Albums, Theatre and Citizen Journalism!
DD’s studios have definitely got a facelift. “We do a lot of brainstorming and referencing before we decide on the ambience. Our in-house set designers take care of the rest,” says Andal. “We also venture outdoors with our crew and talk to ordinary folks because we cater to all strata of viewers.”
Glitches, there are. Yet the new-found spirit at DD’s Chennai office is commendable.
