Sathya was Kamal Haasan's 3rd home production after Raja Parvai (1981) and Vikram (1986). Sathya (1988) starring Kamal Haasan and Amala in the lead roles was the debut directional venture for Suresh Krishna, who was previously the associate director for K. Balachander in films such as Punnagai Mannan and Sindhu Bhairavi. The film was a blockbuster and completed a 150-day run at the box office.
