After a decade of operations, Dish TV has turned profitable at the net level for both the financial year and the quarter ended 31 March 2015.

In fact, it has become the first Indian direct-to-home (DTH) operator to achieve this landmark. Dish TV posted a net profit of Rs 3.1 crore (Rs 31 million) for the fiscal, as against a net loss of Rs 157.6 crore (Rs 1.58 billion) in the year-ago period.

On turning profitable, Dish TV chairman Subhash Chandra said, “I congratulate the entire team at Dish TV on withstanding all odds and putting up a strong show against its worthy competitors in the Indian pay DTH sector.

The team has delivered on a difficult mandate of growth with profitability, something that I believe is essential for any commerce to be sustainable.

Through this milestone to the next and thereafter, Dish TV remains committed to outperform the industry growth rate and create shareholder value while continuing to entertain its subscribers with rich content and compelling value-added services using updated modes of delivery.”

The company’s consolidated revenues stood at Rs 2,781.6 crore (Rs 27.82 billion), recording a 10.9 per cent growth over the previous fiscal. Its operating profit (EBITDA) was at Rs733.1 crore (Rs 7,331 million), up 17.5 per cent.

Subscriber addition Getting back to a strong subscriber growth despite an extension in the deadline for Phases III and IV of digital addressable system (DAS), Dish TV doubled net subscriber additions to 1.5 million during the fiscal.

The DTH company has 12.9 million net subscribers. In FY14, the subscriber growth had remained muted with 0.7 million additions.

Towards the end of the last fiscal, the company had launched a sub-brand called Zing for the price-conscious consumers in Phase III and IV markets, who prefer regional-language television channels.

Launched in March 2014, Zing started tapping the regional-language consumption market, while mother brand Dish TV continued to add subscribers at a broader level.

Today, for Dish TV, Zing is contributing 22 per cent of incremental subscriber addition, and the company is expecting Phase III and IV markets as fertile grounds for DTH.
