If there were a half-yearly report on the state of the film industry, Disney UTV would be distributing celebratory sweets right now. Between the seven Hindi and one Hollywood films the studio has released this year, it has managed to rake in 48% of the total box office collections of all the 39 films released by various studios in India in 2013 so far.

A huge contribution to that tally was made by the latest blockbuster from Karan Johar's Dharma Productions, Yeh Jawani, Hai Deewani, which Disney UTV has the domestic theatrical rights for. So far, the film has collected close to Rs 141 crore during its

12-day run. The agreement between Disney and multiplex owners provides for a bonus if the film crossed the Rs 100-crore mark in first week collections, which it did. So, Disney UTV will get an additional 2.5% share of the box office collections for the first week, taking the total share to 52.5%.

The distributor's share is usually around 45%, with minor variations from film to film. "Our philosophy of focusing on great content, irrespective of genre, star cast and budget, has reflected in almost Rs 500 crore net collections and close to 50% of the total box office this year. Our diverse slate has helped us achieve this benchmark and it only spurs us on to keep a keen eye out for the next great story to tell," said MD, Studios Disney UTV, Siddharth Roy Kapur.

The studio also gets credit for releasing the two top grossing Hindi films this year so far — Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Race 2 - and the highest grossing Hollywood movie in India this year, Iron Man 3, which netted the studio Rs 55 crore. With Shahrukh Khan's Chennai Express, Prakash Jha's Satyagraha and Hollywood flicks like The Lone Ranger and Monsters University due for release later this year, Disney UTV's dominance could just continue.
