Dubai hotels record 13.6 per cent growth in Q1 of 2011: DTCM report

Dubai’s hotel establishments recorded 13.6 per cent growth during the first quarter of 2011, reaching 2.38 million up from 2.09 million recorded in the first quarter of 2010, according to the latest report issued by the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM), Dubai government’s tourism licensing and promotional body, according to a release

Of this, 1.84 million guests stayed in hotels and 533,190 people stayed in hotel apartments. Guest nights that measure the average length of stay, rose 35.4 per cent rising to 8.4 million in the first quarter of this year, up from 6.2 million recorded during the corresponding period last year. This reflects a strong growth in average length of stay in Dubai’s hotels to nearly four nights.

Hotel establishment revenues recorded a 16.3 per cent increase during the same period to Dhs.4.36 billion, rising from Dhs 3.75 billion. Of this, hotels generated Dhs 3.73 billion and hotel apartments generated Dhs 623.87 million.

Khalid A Bin Sulayem, Director-General of the DTCM, said, “This positive result is due to close cooperation between the government and the private sector organisation and our relentless efforts to attract visitors to the emirate.”

The total number of rooms available in Dubai rose to 72,419 at the end of the first quarter of 2011, compared to 64,143 recorded at the end of the first quarter of 2010. Despite this, hotel occupancy rose by 3.7 percentage points to 79 per cent, up from 76.2 per cent.

However, hotel apartment occupancy rose by 5.5 percentage points to 78.5 per cent up from 73 per cent. Dubai has 573 hotels and hotel apartments including 385 hotels and 188 hotel apartments.

Commenting on the potential for tourism between the Dubai & India, Carl Vaz, Director - DTCM India said, "India today exhibits exponential growth for inward visitor traffic into Dubai. A large segment of Indian visitors utilise hotels and hotel apartments in the Emirate making India the top source market. From over 169,084 Indian travellers first quarter of 2010 that stayed in Dubai’s hotel and hotel apartments, we have crossed over 186,477 for the corresponding period of 2011 representing a growth rate of 10 per cent. In 2009, over 529,500 Indian travellers stayed in Dubai’s hotel and hotel apartments, which crossed to over 638,100 in 2010 representing an annual growth rate of 21 per cent.
