Doordarshan’s strength of 24-hour regional language channels has gone up to fifteen with the soft launch of channels in Patna, Bhopal, Jaipur and Lucknow.
While the public service broadcaster already has eleven regional language channels, the programmes to these centres were being telecast for about four hours every evening from 5.00 pm.
Doordarshan director general Tripurari Sharan, confirming the soft launch, said these channels may be formally launched later after trial runs.
He said they would be on the lines of DD National – a mix of news and general entertainment.
He said these four channels would be relayed on INSAT 4B, apart from being relayed terrestrially through the cable TV network.
The regional languages satellite channels have two components – The regional service for the particular state relayed by all terrestrial transmitters in the state, and additional programmes in the regional language in prime time and non-prime time available only through cable operators.
At present, the eleven regional channels are: DD North East (for which programmes are produced at Doordarshan studios in Guwahati, Agartala, Kohima, Imphal, Silchar, Dibrugarh, Tura, Aizawl, Itanagar and Shillong); DD Oriya (Doordarshan Kendras of Bhubaneshwar, Sambalpur and Bhawanipatna); DD Podhigai in Tamil; DD Punjabi (Jalandhar); DD Sahyadri in Marathi, DD Saptagiri in Telugu; DD Bangla; DD Gujarati; DD Chandana in Kannada; DD Kashir (Kashmiri language satellite channel supported by Doordarshan studios in Srinagar, Jammu and Leh); and DD Malayalam.
