MUMBAI: Time Warner will launch HBO as a stand-alone service in 2015, a move that is set to threaten cable TV subscriptions as it makes way for consumers to have more choice of content by offering its service directly to
viewers over the Internet.
The revelation was made during a talk by HBO CEO Richard Plepler at Time Warner’s investor meeting.
HBO will join the growing trend of making content largely available on the Internet as viewers tend to enjoy more choices online through services like Netflix, YouTube and
Hulu.
The new move is essentially an expansion of its HBO Go streaming video platform, which allows subscribers to view current and older shows on devices other than television, both inside and outside the home. HBO currently allows cable subscribers to access its content including popular shows like ‘The Sopranos’ and ‘s#x and the City’ on mobile devices through an app known as HBO Go.
