MUMBAI: When Times Network stitched a volume
content contract with MGM, it was the first time
that the broadcaster did a first-output deal with
a major Hollywood studio.
Speaking to TelevisionPost.com, Times Network
senior VP, head of English entertainment cluster
Vivek Srivastava said, “It has the Bond library, as
well as the Rocky, Robocop, The Hobbit and the
Pink Panther franchises. In addition, we will get six
to eight premieres a year. So you will see films like
‘Creed’ and ‘Ben Hur’ premiere on our channels.
MGM gives us A-list premieres along with a strong
library.”
The library gives a significant chunk of titles,
including the 24 Bond films. The library will be
spread across the three channels depending on
profile.
“The three brands are distinct. Anything that is a
premiere and a blockbuster will go to Movies Now.
If it is a sophisticated title and an Oscar winner, it
will go on MN+. If it is as a romantic comedy, it will
go to Romedy Now. So ‘Me Before You’ will
premiere next year on Romedy Now,” said
Srivastava.
So, what about the Bond franchise? “The Bond
franchise will probably go to Movies Now, though we
will see if a Bond title is suitable for Movies Now 2.
This is a homecoming for Bond. We aired Bond films
before the library went to Sony. We might just put
‘The Pink Panther’ on Movies Now 2,” Srivastava
explained.
The broadcaster has not decided how to use the
Bond franchise yet. “It is too early to decide on
that. We had played Bond earlier before it went to
Pix. It is an important franchise. We would want to
give it as much thrust as required. It is important
that the other franchises like ‘Rocky’ and
‘Robocop’ add value.”
In terms of the science of the extent of playing a
franchise, he said, “If it has been used too much,
then you would want to give it a rest. If it hasn’t,
then you would want to promote a new trend. It
depends on how much it has been used. But as a
philosophy, we don’t believe in over-running a tile.
We stick to the bare minimum run that is
required.”
He noted that franchises like Bond and Rocky
continue to hold huge appeal today. “They are
evergreen titles that you would want to have in
your armoury.”
