Indigenous set-top-boxes manufacturers have
expressed conviction to meet the demand of 110
million STBs for phase III and IV cable TV
digitisation, said Bimal Julka, Secretary of
Information and Broadcasting Ministry. The
ministry had held a review meeting with the
manufacturers to evaluate their readiness to meet
the demand on September 12, 2014.
Members of Consumer Electronics and
Appliances Manufacturers Association and
representatives from STB manufacturers told the
secretary that they have sufficient installed
capacity to meet full demand of STBs locally.
The government classified STBs as telecom
equipment to give a boost to the indigenous
manufacturing industry. The manufacturers
opined that this would attract investments of
about INR 5 billion and generate employment for
about 50,000 people. The government had also
reduced central sales tax to 2% against VAT of
12-14%, on August 13, 2014.

Indian need a super basic STB within Rs 500, either the domestic manufacturers has to manufacture one within this cost or the govt needs to subsidize at-least for the first STB and bring the cost within Rs 500.

We cant just force people to buy STB at Rs 1500 when the state govt like TN which has given free color tv's to every households.
