It’s raining news channels in the mineral-rich state of Odisha. As in 2014, which saw the launch of two high-profile channels, namely Focus Odisha and Zee Kalinga, this year too could see a spate of launches.
Bhubaneswar-based Kalinga Media Entertainment Pvt Ltd (KEMPL) is one such company that is planning to venture into the news broadcast space by launching free-to-air news channel Kalinga TV. The launch is likely to take place in the next few months.
KEMPL is promoted by a group of individuals associated with Bhubaneswar-based Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT).
The directors of the company include Umapada Bose, Himanshu Sekhar Khatua, Dwiti Chandragupta Vikramaditya and Satyaendra Patnaik.
KEMPL has an authorised share capital of Rs 210 million and a paid-up capital of Rs 41 million.
“We plan to launch a 24×7 news channel Kalinga TV. We have not yet decided on the launch date,” said KEMPL director and Himanshu Sekhar Khatua, who is also the CEO of KIIT School of Film and Media Sciences.
According to Khatua, the news channel venture will have synergy with the university’s mass communication courses. “Mass communication students passing out of the institute will get internship in the channel. It will act as a training ground for them,” he explained.
Queried about the USP of the channel, Khatua said that the channel would air positive news with a focus on social and education-related issues.
While remaining tight-lipped about the investment in the channel, Khatua said that promoters are putting in the money to run the channel.
As of now, the senior editorial team comprises three deputy chief editors Sarada Lahangiri, Saikat Patra, and Apurva Mahanty.
The total employee strength initially will be 100, which will go up to 160 in the coming years.
Kalinga TV will be up against strong players like OTV, which is the market leader, followed by Zee Kalinga, Focus Odisha, and other smaller players like MBC TV.
