The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting ( MIB) has granted two teleport licences in December to Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL) and Planetcast Media Services (formerly Essel Shyam Communication).
This is the second time that the two companies have got teleport licences. ZEEL had got a teleport licence in November while Planetcast had received one in May.
Incidentally, the MIB had granted only four teleport licences in 2016 with both companies getting two each. The ministry granted 83 teleport licences until December 2016.
Both of ZEEL’s teleports will be located in Noida while Planetcast’s one teleport will be in Noida and other one will be in Mumbai.
Barring the two new licences it received this year, Planetcast already had three teleports, two in Noida and one in Kerala.
ZEEL will use the licences to set up its own teleport hub in Noida to uplink channels. Earlier, it was using Dish TV’s teleport infrastructure. The company will uplink channels to Intelsat 20 and Asisat 7.
Planetcast, which provides its teleport infrastructure to third-party clients, will uplink channels to Asiasat 8 through its Mumbai teleport. This will be Planetcast’s first teleport in Mumbai.
As reported earlier ZEEL was using the teleport of Dish TV to uplink its TV channels. “We had applied for a teleport licence. We have got the approval from the MIB. Though currently we are using Dish TV’s teleport infrastructure, we have decided to have our own facility. We will set up our own teleport from where we will uplink our channels. There will be no overlapping,” a senior executive had then Said.
