After Discovery’s exit from OneAlliance, MSM to bring BBC Earth to India

MUMBAI: Within six months of the disbanding of their distribution joint venture MSM Discovery (MSMD), Multi Screen Media (MSM) has shown interest in distributing factual entertainment channels to fill up the gap.

MSM has revealed its intention to form a strategic partnership with BBC Worldwide, the commercial arm of the BBC, to bring BBC Earth, the recently launched premium factual television channel, to India. After having replaced BBC Knowledge in Poland, BBC Earth will be available in the Nordic countries (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland) from this month.

The channel will have content from BBC Worldwide’s extensive catalogue of programming. The channel features the wonders of the universe, including the work of the world’s foremost factual filmmakers.

“From the smallest creature under the microscope to the limitless expanses of space, BBC Earth brings viewers face to face with heart-pounding action, mind-blowing ideas, and the wonder of being human,” MSM said. MSM and Discovery had earlier ended their 12-year marriage as the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) regulation outlawed the bundling of television channels across broadcast companies. MSM held 74 per cent stake in MSMD, while the remaining 26 per cent was with Discovery Communications.

MSMD, under the brand name of TheOneAlliance, used to distribute the channels from MSM bouquet, Discovery Communications, TV Today Network, Times Television Network (now Times Network), and Neo Sports Broadcast.
