MUMBAI: Analogue signals will continue in digital addressable system (DAS) Phase III areas of Tamil Nadu even after the 31 December deadline as the Madras High Court has directed the Union Government to maintain status quo until 6 January. Tamil Nadu Arasu Cable TV Corporation (TACTV) had filed a petition in the HC to direct the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) to grant provision for DAS registration to the corporation. Justice MM Sundresh passed an interim order to maintain status quo until the next date of hearing, which is 6 January. TACTV counsel Abdul Saleem submitted that the MSO had applied for DAS licence on 5 July 2012 and for regularisation of the licence on 23 November 2012. He contended status quo should be maintained until the government takes a decision on the same. The “inaction on the part of the ministry is illegal, against the due process of law and violative of Articles 14 and 21 of the Constitution of India”, he argued. Advocate General AL Somayaji submitted that though TACTV applied for the licence much earlier, the earlier government at the Centre did not consider the plea. He said that 326 provisional registrations have been granted to other operators. He also said that the signals of TACTV would be disconnected after 31 December, which is the cut-off date for DAS Phase III.
