Minister of State in the Ministry of Information &
Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Rathore has said that there is
presently no proposal to launch a special media channel
for live broadcasting of court proceedings.

Rathore was responding to a question in the Rajya Sabha
as regards whether the government was planning to launch
a special media channel for live broadcasting of court
proceedings on the lines of Rajya Sabha/Lok Sabha TV to
bring more transparency in the judicial system and to
accelerate judicial proceedings.]/b]

Rathore’s response is contrary to Law Minister Sadananda
Gowda’s assertion that the Centre is keen on live telecast
and video recording of all court proceedings in the country
including that of the Supreme Court.

“After the completion of the second phase of the ‘e-court
mission’ project, it will be easier for us to go ahead.
Certainly a day should come when everything should be
transparent. What all proceedings are going in the courts
should be made known to each and every person in the
country, not only the litigant but even the interested parties
should be able to see what things are going inside the
court. It will happen, it will happen,” Gowda had told The
Telegraph in an interview.

In September, the Madras High Court had telecast the
contempt proceedings against two advocates live on a
television screen. This was a first in the history of Indian
judiciary.
