Most of the cable TV viewers faced a TV blackout when the clock struck 12. The analog switch-off came despite the cable operators approaching district magistrate Anurag Yadav on Sunday with a plea that transmission of signals be continued for non-STB cable subscribers.
However, in some areas of the city, the television sets without STBs were found to be working after Sunday midnight - the deadline for cable TV digitisation. The operators informed the DM that because of the shortage of STBs, they have not been able to install them across the city within the deadline. Many of the operators have even received advance payment from customers, the DM was told.
“We urged him that for the sake of lakhs of subscribers, the administration should at least ensure that viewers are able to watch TV,” said Anil Upadhyay, president, UP Cable Operators’ Welfare Association.
On Saturday, chief minister Akhilesh Yadav had written to Union I&B minister Manish Tiwari requesting for a six-month extension to the deadline for seven cities, including Lucknow. Yadav also urged Tiwari to ensure that cable TV subscribers, who were yet to install the devices, were not barred from receiving signals.
For switching over to digital mode from the existing analog mode, all subscribers of cable and satellite TV were required to install STBs by March 31, in accordance with the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) directive. With more than 2.5 lakh set-top boxes yet to be installed, the deadline was missed.
