Free terrestrial broadcasting of HD-quality TV channels is likely to be a novelty in a country.

Doordarshan is setting up a free high-definition (HD) broadcasting system in the four cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai.

From DD Kolkata Studio - DD Bangla HD

DD people said it plans to get over the HD content scarcity by setting up its own HD content creation facilities, including outdoor broadcasting (OB) vans.

It is currently setting up HDTV Studios at Delhi and Mumbai, HDTV field production, post production and preview facilities at Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai and HDTV OB Vans for Chennai, Delhi Kolkata and Mumbai.

DD has already begun HD content for the HDTV terrestrial transmitters at Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai.

HDTV will not be delivered in the analogue mode as DDs programs are currently transmitted, but in the digital mode.

As such, users will need to buy a set top box costing about Rs 2,000-2,500 in open market simply to watch Terrestrial HD channel from Doordarshan Chennai / Mumbai / Delhi / Kolkata.

Note: All DTH and cable operators are now selling their HD set top boxes for about Rs 2,000.

So, friends if you living in Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata, just check with electronic shop to find FTA-HDTV set-top box and update branded FTA-HD set-top box name.

How many people are going to watch DD HD channels which will require HD STB/antenna?
What is the purpose of such HD terrestrial transmission when DD is already having DD+?
Why to waste money on HD terrestrial transmission?
Instead DD can use DD+ to distribute these channels. Already many people have invested money on DD+ FTA STB.

Ongoing Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2014 - DD NEWS CWG HD - Terrestrial HD Channel is now available at Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata.

Yes, it will not available in any other cities as DD's Terrestrial HD transmitters and HD broadcasting facility is still available only in Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata...

In future it will be available across India.

Programmes (Live/Highlights) will also be telecast during the Games on DD HD. That apart, All India Radio will carry the live commentary of the opening and closing and events involving Indians.

Regular Highlight Capsules will be telecast daily by DD HD. All events where Indians are taking part will be highlighted with live coverage.
