Star Sports will be broadcasting live and exclusive coverage of the 2013 Wimbledon tennis tournament on three channels – Star Sports 2, Espn and Espn HD, Starting 24 June.
This coverage will be unprecedented as for the first time on Indian television; tennis fans will have a choice to see the maximum number of Wimbledon matches featuring their favourite players across the network.
This year the sports broadcaster is aiming to showcase a minimum of 150 hours of live broadcast covering the entire tournament across the three channels which would be a 25 per cent increase over previous years.
Wimbledon 2013 will also see a host of Indian doubles players trying to earn top spots in their respective events. Leander Paes has been seeded fourth with Czech partner Radek Stepanek while Mahesh Bhupathi with Austrian Julian Knowle has been seeded eighth. Rohan Bopanna, with Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin, has been seeded 14th. Interestingly, Divij Sharan and Purav Raja will also make their first ever appearance at a Grand Slam as the Indian duo came through the qualification process. In the women's doubles category, Sania Mirza is the lone Indian participant and has been seeded sixth with American and former World No. 1 doubles player, Liezel Huber.
The year’s Wimbledon championship is expected to be one of the most interesting one with a very open draw. Novak Djokovic, the top seed, will look to reclaim the trophy he won in 2011. Roger Federer – last year’s champion and 17-time Grand Slam winner, had a difficult first five months of the season but he remains a very strong contender. In the women's section, defending champion and five-time winner Serena Williams will be the top seed. Williams is currently on a career-best run of 31 unbeaten matches and will be an overwhelming favourite to win her sixth title at the All England Club. Two-time Wimbledon semi-finalist Victoria Azarenka and 2004 champion Maria Sharapova will remain strong contenders as always.
