PUNE: The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation(PCMC) recently removed unauthorized television cables covering a total length of around 400km in the municipal limits.
S Urgude, development engineer in PCMC's electrical department, said, "The civic administration had earlier given a notice to local cable television operators and had asked them to remove the unauthorized cables drawn over the streetlights by August 31, failing which they were to be seized. The cable operators did not follow the directives, so the civic body started removing the cables from September 1." Urgude said that some private cable television operators and internet connection providers removed cables covering a stretch of 150 km, the remaining cables covering a stretch of 253 km were removed by the civic body and are kept in the PCMC's godown in Pimpri.
He said around 80% of the television cables and input feeder cables of internet in the city have already been taken off. "The civic body took a lot of time to remove the cables from gaothan areas and other populated parts as there were too many cables there," Urgude said.
Cables were removed using hydraulic ladders. The drive ended on September 4 and the civic body will remove the remaining 20% of the cables after the Ganeshotsav and Navaratra celebrations are over.
Urgude said the civic body conducted the drive as the cables were dangling on the roads precariously and had caused accidents in the past injuring many pedestrians. These unauthorized cables also marred the skyline of the city, he said.
He said the civic body has appealed to private cable television operators, who will be affected by the drive, to contact the city engineer's office or the executive engineer of engineering department with their plan to lay the cables underground. He said that a policy for laying the television cables and internet cables underground will be prepared by a team comprising the city engineer, town planning department, law department and electrical departments in the next three months.
