Subscribers of Tamil Nadu Arasu Cable Television Corporation (TACTV) can henceforth pay their monthly subscription amount either through Internet or at branches of Indian Bank, Indian Overseas Bank and Karur Vysya Bank, as the Madras High Court Bench here on Tuesday dismissed a writ petition filed by the Cable Operators Guild of Madurai.
Justice K.K. Sasidharan refused to quash a notification issued by TACTV on February 20 permitting online and bank payment of subscription apart from the existing practice of paying the money to Local Cable Operators (LCOs).
He held that TACTV was authorised to introduce new collection methods depending upon practical difficulties faced by it from time to time.
The judge recorded the statement made by Additional Advocate General K. Chellapandian that the alternative modes of payment were introduced following large scale complaints received by TACTV, a government entity, accusing LCOs of collecting exorbitant amount from the subscribers than the government fixed subscription amount of Rs. 70 per month.
Though the LCOs apprehended that the new modes of payment might deprive them of the charge of Rs. 50 per connection which they had been retaining as per the existing procedure, the AAG said that the government had already devised a software to keep track of the collection and would deposit the amount due to the LCOs in their bank accounts on the tenth day of every month.
