Popular Malayalam film actor Thilakan passes away

Monday, Popular Malayalam film actor Thilakan passed away early Monday morning at around 3:45am. He breathed his last in a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram and has been in hospital for pneumonia and cardiac problems since close to a month. Aged 74, this actor par excellence was known for his unconventional portrayal of character roles and bold stance on various social issues.
Thilakan has acted in more than 200 films in a career spanning more than 50 years. Born as Surendranath Thilakan on July 15, 1938, his first foray into acting was in theatres where he was a name to reckon with his brilliant essaying of complex characters. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2009 for his contribution to arts.
Thilakan was hospitalized on Aug 23 following a heart attack and reportedly collapsed during a film shoot. He has been in a critical condition ever since.
Thilakan's demise is sure to leave a vaccum in the Malayalam film industry.
