The first quarter of financial year 2015 for news broadcasters has been positive as they have reported a healthy profit.
Broadcasters are slowly getting benefits of digitisation, which spanned across in 38 cities and four metros in the past year.
NDTV Group’s standalone turned profitable in Q1 FY15 with a profit of Rs 2.6 crore compared to a loss of Rs 19 crore for the same period last year, a positive swing of Rs 21.5 crore.
NDTV standalone registered growth of 47 per cent in revenues at Rs 117 crore in Q1 FY15 as compared to Rs 80 crore in Q1 FY14.
Zee Media Corporation has reported Q1 FY15 consolidated revenues of Rs 1,334.6 million.
Television business operating revenue for the first quarter ended June 30, 2014 grew by 33.7 per cent to Rs 1,038.7 million. TV business EBITDA for the first quarter stood at Rs 132.2 million, up 42 per cent.
Television advertising revenue for Q1 FY15 stood at Rs 800.1 million, a growth of 51.2 per cent.
While on the other hand Sun TV network has reported a marginal rise in its Q1 FY15 ad revenues at Rs 280.42 crore. The network operates TV channels across four languages – Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam, FM radio stations across India and the SunRisers Hyderabad IPL cricket franchise.
Subscription revenues across cable, DTH and international continue to maintain uptrend, with cable TV revenues growing by 15 per cent and DTH subscription revenues growing by 21 per cent over Q1 FY14.
TV Today network reported their highest growth in the entire fiscal year with 32.79 crores. Net profit has more than doubled from Rs 11.98 crore reported in Q1 of the previous fiscal.
The network’s TV broadcasting business reported an increase of 55.61 per cent in revenues to Rs 133.64 crore in Q1 FY15, as compared to Rs 85.88 crores in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal.
Total income registered a rise of 54.10 per cent to Rs 137 crore during Q1 FY15 as against Rs 88.90 crore in Q1 FY14.
The network’s FM radio business reported revenues of Rs 3.36 crore, up 11.62 per cent from Rs 3.01 crore in Q1 of the previous fiscal.
It is yet to be seen if these numbers are a possible indication of upward trend in news broadcast business and can news broadcasters maintain this surge throughout the financial year.
