Chennai: The move to hike the import duty to 10 per cent from 5 per cent on the set-top boxes to boost local manufacturers has evoked mixed responses from the cable TV operators and MSOs saying that move would actually increase the cost burden on thousands of cable TV subscribers from the 60 two tier cities across the country where March deadline has been set up for switching over to STBs as presently there are no manufacturing units in the country, while others say it may augur well in the long run.
Arasu Cable TV sources told DC that the move would yield good results in the long run. be likely to affect the service providers at first and would yield good results in the long run.
TN Cable TV operators’ welfare association president, Sakilan, said with the deadline to switching over to DAS already closed they have no other option but to import it from China or Korea which would mean increased burden for subscribers since it would take much time to get locally manufactured STBs. Hence the hike should be rolled back.
Kayal Ilavarasu, Tamilaga cable TV urimayalargal sangam president, said implementation of DAS system should be postponed, at least for two years.
