MUMBAI: With the IPL season over, it’s time for SAB to refresh its programming and live up to its policy of creating differentiation through innovation. Having launched a sci-fi comedy series recently, the channel now takes its programming seven days a week and has launched a multi-level fictional comedy titled ‘Tu Mere Agal Bagal Hai’.
The show aims to take comedy to a new level by mixing fiction with stand-up comedy and featuring a multi-layer set for the first time in seven years. Launching on 7 July, the family show will air at 10:30 pm from Monday to Friday. It will replace the channel’s popular show ‘FIR’, which will now turn into a bi-weekly and air on weekends. This is another first for the channel in the last six years.
Says SAB senior EVP and business head Anooj Kapoor, “In the last seven years, we have never done stand-up comedy. We were thinking what we could do in stand-up and that’s how we thought of mixing fiction and comedy. ‘FIR’ will very much be there as a bi-weekly show.” After every IPL, SAB refreshes its shows.
Admits Kapoor, “This has been our typical trend in the last five years that once IPL finishes, we refresh shows on the channel. Being the only channel doing comedy with a linear storyline, to sustain shows beyond a point is difficult. We have been lucky that all the attempts at refreshing so far have worked and we have grown in terms of ratings.
We are hoping that this year as well.” SAB’s recently launched show ‘Badi Doooor Se Aaye Hai’ opened at 1.8 TVR, which was the best for any SAB show in the past two years. The show has also beaten the competition in the 9:30 pm time slot in terms of time spent, adds Kapoor. Rajesh Kumar as Maalik from Tu Mere Agal Bagal HaiSAB aims to achieve the same from this new show as well, which boasts a star cast comprising veteran actors including Alok Nath, Apara Mehta and Supriya Pathak.
The USP of this show is the presence of live audience on the sets which aims to add spontaneity. Directed by Rajan Waghdhare and produced by Frames, the show revolves around the lives of the owners and the tenants living in Bungalow No. 5.
It explores the funny side of the incidents that happen in the daily lives of the characters in a comic manner. Frames producer Ranjeet Thakur says, “It’s very exciting to explore such a vibrant concept with a channel like SAB which has made a mark in the comedy genre. ‘Tu Mere Agal Bagal Hai’ features an ensemble cast that plays very identifiable roles. All characters possess a certain quirk that the audience will definitely enjoy.”
The show will be hosted by Rajesh Kumar, who plays Laal Singh. The other actors (characters) include Shweta Gulati (Laal’s wife), Alok Nath (Babuji) and their tenants Apara Mehta (Basundi) with her son Samir Shah (Khakra) and daughter-in-law Ami Trivedi (Khandvi). Their other tenants are a South Indian wannabe actor Pillavakandi played by Sugandha Mishra and her husband Pillu played by Dhaval. It also has Manoj Goyal playing Anu and Abhishek Awasthi playing Malik.
Supriya Pathak will play a cameo as ‘mausiji’ of Laal Singh. Being a stand-up comedy show with various characters, comparisons are bound to happen with ‘Comedy Nights with Kapil’. However, Kapoor is undeterred. The major difference between the two shows is that SAB’s property will not have celebrity interviews. Although celebrities are welcome, the show is not dependant on them. The format has the flexibility of tenants coming and going, so celebrities can blend in by playing a character.
