With digitisation of cable TV in full swing, DTH companies offering convenient alternatives to bypass errant cable operators in Salt Lake and adjoining areas are fast reaching new heights.

Around 60 percent digitisation of the area has already been completed. It will take another two years for complete digitisation.

BUSINESS UP

With a flourishing residential and corporate presence in Salt Lake and the neighbouring areas, cable operators and DTH distributors are now busy supplying set top boxes to their clients, who are in a hurry to go digital. Business of set top boxes has gone up by around 25 percent to 50 percent since June this year, when the government's mandate was announced.

Presence of more than 40 cable operators in Salt Lake has speeded up the process of digitisation. Though digitisation does not promise any immediate profits for local cable operators, many of them are hopeful that they would be rewarded in long run.

EARLY BIRDS

Operating from Salt Lake for the last 22 years, Eastern Point Cable said that 80 percent of their customers have already shifted to digital television. "Two decades back when we started cable television facility here, there were hardly any people living here," recalled Sanjay Dutta, who jointly owns Eastern Point with his wife.

"We cashed in on the non-availability of any source of entertainment in the area and started Eastern Point with an initial investment of Rs 1.5 lakh and ran on a loss for the first two years. But waiting for a while helped us earn huge profits. We have a loyal clientele now and we are trusted for being an old name in the region," Dutta added.

For Dutta the digitisation drive brought back some old memories. "Digitisation has brought back the memory of our first few years in the business. In another two years, after all the televisions in the area are digitised, there will be a 100 percent increase in our income," Dutta claimed.

A WAIT FOR CABLE OPERATORS

As per the regulation of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), local cable operators would initially get a share of just Rs 45 out of every Rs 100 that the subscriber will pay for the basic service of 100 free-to-air TV channels.
