IPL starts taking toll on Hindi GECs, top 4 witness drop in ratings

MUMBAI:
It may be slow but like every year, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has started to show its impact on the popular Hindi general entertainment genre. This is evident from the rise of MAX, the official broadcaster of the IPL.

Weighed under the Hindi movie category (during the IPL window, it telecasts movies), MAX saw a rise for the second consecutive week. The category ended the week with 1,331 million GVMs, up 74 million compared to last week. The four-week category average is 1083 million GVMs. On the other hand, the top Hindi GECs have witnessed a fall in viewership in the week ended 26 April.

Sony Entertainment Television (SET) was the sole exception. While it was not unexpected of Star Plus to lose incremental GVMs (gross television viewership in millions) which it had clocked in the previous week on the back of the world TV premiere of the Salman Khan-starrer ‘Jai Ho’, the other major GECs (Zee TV, Colors, Life OK and SAB) collectively lost 83 million GVMs. SET was the only gainer, thanks to ‘Umang’ which it aired twice and clocked a gross viewership of 29 million.

It also surged ahead of SAB to claim the fifth position. Star Plus, while still retaining its No. 1 position, shed 48 million GVMs in Week 17, as per TAM data for Hindi-speaking markets (sourced from subscribers). Incidentally, Star Plus got the maximum number of shows (read eight) in the top 10 fiction shows list.

Star Plus’ share in the genre (non-FTA GECs) remained 29.2 per cent. While holding on to the second spot in the pecking order, Zee TV also lost 28 million GVMs. Only one show from the channel found a place in the top 10 list. No. 3 Colors, meanwhile, saw a marginal drop with 423 million GVMs (433 million in the previous week).

Among other channels, both Life OK and SAB incurred marginal losses. The Hindi GEC category witnessed total GVMs of 2,734 million, down 85 million compared to 2,819 million GVMs it had grabbed in the week-ago period. The last four-week average of the category stands at 2,838 million GVMs.

Star Plus had eight shows (‘Diya Aur Baati Hum’, ‘Saathiya Saath Nibhana’, ‘Mahabharat’, ‘Yeh Rishta’, ‘Veera’, ‘Saraswatichandra’, ‘Pyaar Ka Dard Hai’ and ‘Yeh Hai Mohabbatein’), Zee TV and SAB had one show each—‘Jodha Akbar’ and ‘Tarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashma’ respectively—in the 10 most watched fiction shows list. No show from Colors, Life OK, or SET featured in the list.

Top non-fiction/ weekend programmes

Colors’ non-fiction show ‘Comedy Nights with Kapil’ continued to top the category with 7.0 million, which happens to be significantly lower than its average. This was followed by ‘Khataron Ke Khiladi’ with 5.8 million. Zee TV’s ‘DID Little Masters 3’ was at No. 3 with 3.9 million, while SET’s ‘CID’ was fourth with 3.8 million. Zee TV’s latest comedy show ‘Gangs of Hansipur’ claimed the fifth place with 2.7 million.

New launches/events/film premieres The world TV premiere of ‘Hansi to Phansi’ on Colors fetched 3.0 million GVMs, which contributed a gross viewership of 17 million. Zee TV’s ‘Gangs of Hansipur’ (Sat–Sun 8 pm) opened with a viewership of 2.7 million while the movie premiere of the animated ‘Mahabharat’ got the channel 2.4 million GVMs, contributing a gross viewership of 13 million.
