MUMBAI: Multi Screen Media’s (MSM) sports channel Six will air the Karnataka Premier League (KPL) from tomorrow.
Matches will air at 1 pm and 5 pm. Taking place on 12 September, the final is scheduled to air at 6 pm on the channel.
This is the start of an effort to revive local cricket, and the teams taking part are Belagavi Panthers, Bellary Tuskers, Bijapur Bulls, Hubli Tigers, Mangalore United and Mysore Warriors.
Six business head Prasana Krishnan notes that the KPL was held twice in the past in 2009 and 2010.
“Other states like Jharkhand have also held a league, but they did not take off. Perhaps they were ahead of their time.
The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) wanted to revive the event. Their local talent has some international players like Robin Uthappa and Manish Pandey.
For us at Six it is an interesting time to experiment. Domestic events have been stagnant in the last few years. Other states will wait to see if the Karnataka league is a long-term economic model to follow.
The KSCA is optimistic about things and so are we.”
He adds that Karnataka is the main viewership market for the KPL.
“When they first did the event, they had a local broadcaster airing it. Now they will get visibility at a national level. They have also tied up with other local partners like print publication Vijaya Karnataka to create buzz about the league in that state.”
The title sponsor for the 2014 edition is Karbonn Mobiles. The KSCA will also advertise on Six during the event.
Krishnan added that the KSCA has done integrated deals with their sponsors, who will also be seen on Six.
The league is chaired by the KSCA secretary Brijesh Patel.
The KPL aims to raise the profile of the sport in the districts of Karnataka, which is why the event is taking place in smaller places like Hubli.
The rules are designed in such a way that no team can have more than three players from outside Karnataka.
Six is airing spots to promote the league across the MSM network. It is also using the digital medium to create awareness.
Krishnan also does not see an issue with different leagues in various sports airing at the same time.
“As the sports environment and economy matures, this is what will happen. In the US, the NFL, NBA and ice hockey leagues air at the same time. Each league has its own fan following.
The same thing is happening in India where a local cricket league, a local kabaddi league and a local soccer league will air together along with international leagues like the English Premier League.
Each will have its set of viewers.”
