MUMBAI: India’s leading ATP event Aircel Chennai Open has signed Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI) as the official broadcast partner for its upcoming edition, which kicks off on 2 January at the SDAT Tennis Stadium in Nungambakkam.
The tournament, which is in its 22nd year, will be broadcast live on SPNI’s premier sports channels, Sony Six Sony and Six HD, as well as the Sony Liv app and website. The rights were earlier with Ten Sports, which has been acquired by SPNI for $385 million from ZEEL.
Aircel Chennai Open will add to the existing strong line-up of tennis programming on the sports cluster of SPNI, which already includes the Australian Open, ATP World Tour Masters 1000, ATP World Tour 500 and the prestigious season-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. SPNI’s broadcast of premium tennis events firmly reinforces its focus on tennis, and tennis fans in India can now look forward to the world’s top-ranked players in men’s professional tennis on tour.
The tournament this year promises to be a bigger and better affair with top of the line players, including World No. 6 Marin Cilic (Croatia), Roberto Bautista Agut (Spain), Borna Coric (Croatia), Tommy Robredo (Spain) and Mikhail Youzhny (Russia) going head to head. Indian players on the roster include Leander Paes, Rohan Bopanna, Saketh Myreni and Ramkumar Ramanathan vying to begin the new tennis season with a flying start.
Aircel Chennai Open tournament director Tom Annear said, “We believe in getting better with each edition of the tournament. All of the centre court matches will be broadcast for our viewers to enjoy the action of the new season’s opening tournament. We want to provide a special experience for Aircel Chennai Open fans worldwide, and our association with Sony Pictures Networks India is another step in that direction.”
SPNI president, distribution and sports business Rajesh Kaul said, “The Aircel Chennai Open is yet another significant addition to the SPNI’s line-up of live tennis properties that validates our network as the premier destination for tennis fans. We are pleased to showcase India’s only international live tennis tournament which is a part of the prestigious ATP World Tour 250 series of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) World Tour. Our viewers will get to watch some of the finest Indian and international players in men’s professional tennis during primetime on our on-air and digital platforms.”
