the Japanese giant seeks to tap booming demand for content in the South Asian nation, according to people familiar with the matter.

The Tokyo-based company is currently conducting due diligence on Ambani’s Network18 Media & Investments Ltd. before any possible offer, the people said, asking not to be named as the information is not public. Sony is considering several potential deal structures, including a bid for the company or a merger of its own Indian business with Network18’s entertainment channels, one of the people said.

A successful deal may help Sony bolster its local offerings and take on upstart rivals such as Netflix Inc., it will give Ambani access to international content. The Indian tycoon’s wireless carrier, Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd., has spent almost $50 billion in the past few years on its network to disrupt India’s telecommunications industry and has been luring users by offering local and overseas programming

Sony Corporation is in talks to acquire a stake in the Indian television network controlled by billionaire Mukesh Ambani, as the Japanese giant seeks to tap booming demand for content in the South Asian nation, according to people familiar with the matter.

Sony operates in the South Asian country through Sony Pictures Networks India, which has a bouquet of channels including Sony Entertainment Television, reaching over 700 million viewers in India.

TV18 Broadcast owns and operates 56 channels in India spanning news and entertainment. It also caters to the global Indian diaspora through 16 international channels.

Dear Sony Pictures Network, please tell us why u r neglecting a wonderful channel like Sony BBC Earth? Wrong packaging is ruining its potential, even promotion is hardly visible. Is this intentional? Better BBC exits partnership with Sony and tries join hands with some other broadcaster

Few months back there was news floating about Sony planning to sell its TV Channels business and now this has surfaced. Also what happened to Viacom-CBS collaborating with Sony + Discovery, is this connected to it. May be Viacom already has stake in Indian Business and now Sony will buy some from Mr. Ambani . Discovery might pitch in later after A&E decides to partner with parent Disney in India and exit JV with Viacom

If this deal happens, then Jio Fiber & Mobile subscribers will get exclusive content from Sony along with Disney/Hotstar.

It's still a preliminary stage. Sony has failed in its last talks with stake of zee.
Now network 18. Network18 and Sony have very close relationship. So I think this time it could be more stronger.
Currently fox merge with Disney may not have done much to Disney.
Viacom 18 is a big success for network 18.
Sony may look at this example to become successful network in South Asia

What percentage of stake reliance own in network 18.?
Can someone tell
(Network 18 owns 51% in Viacom 18.)
